Dubai World Championship is the richest golf tournament in the world. It is the result of a five-year agreement between European Tour and Leisurecorp (the company that manages the community of golfers, which revolves around the Jumeirah Golf Estate). Here are allowed to contest the Dubai World Championship only the best 60 golfers evaluated according to a special classification, The Race to Dubai, based on the European Tour order of merit and including all the tournaments of European tour calendar.
Under the agreement between the European Tour and Jumeirah Golf Estates, the offices of the European Tour circuit continue to be housed at Wentworth (England), but a branch was opened at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, which is home of the Dubai World Championship.
In November 2009, Lee Westwood won the Dubai World Championship on the Earth Course of the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.
