The honeymoon is the trip made by a newly married couple to celebrate their marriage. The origin of the name is unclear. Surely, the term "moon" refers to the first month of marriage. Some texts (for example "The Oxford Dictionary") consider the "honey" a reference to the sweetness of the first period after the wedding.
According to Wikipedia - the online encyclopedia http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luna_di_miele - a more historical origin date back the honeymoon even to the Babel time: in this period was used to give married couples a quantity of mead (a honey liqueur) sufficient for a month. It was thought that this drink would guarantee fertility. Despite the Babylonian origin is not safe, the habit of giving the spouses a quantity of mead or similar drinks was common in ancient Rome and in the Middle Ages.
A so ancient origin of the expression "honeymoon" is justified because it is present in many languages, like French (Lune de miel), Spanish (Luna de miel) and Italian (Luna di miele). In Wales (mis mêl) and Arabic (shahr el 'assal) are used expressions that literally translated means "month of honey", which obviously have the same meaning.
There might be an explanation correlated with the rituals related to the lunar phases, in particular with that of the "honey moon", which description speaks of a "moment rich in nature, dedicated to positive change."
Honeymoon: The Dubai Creek
Frances Gordon recommends in his book "Oman, Yemen and United Arab Emirates", EDT Editions (one of the best guides to Dubai and surroundings):
'Khor Dubai (the Dubai Creek) is the heart of the city, and it is a must for all travelers. The abra – the boats - cross it all day in both directions at a price of just 50 fil per person per each journey. You can also rent an abra for about Dh 50 (for the whole boat, not per person): normally the captain takes you to the Al-Maktoum bridge and takes you back to the starting point, thus giving you the chance to see the whole city in an excursion of 45 minutes. When you are on the Deira side, do not forget to visit the docks where are loaded and unloaded the dhow (elders), which leave or come from the ports of Asia and Gulf with all sorts of goods. You will see closely these pretty wooden boats typical of Dubai, and you might be lucky enough to be invited on board by the captain. Late afternoon is the best time for this walk and it is the best time to explore the famous gold, spices and perfumes, souk with typical aromatic and lively atmosphere. On the Bur Dubai side take a go and have a look in the historic district of Bastakia on waterfront. Here you will find the traditional wind towers, ancient residences of wealthy merchants of southern Iran. Built between 1900 and 1930, the buildings in this area are included in a massive program of restoration, but you can still visit the neighborhood. Even the Dubai Souq, covered by a wooden roof and punctuated by a myriad of fabric store, is worth a visit.
Dubai Museum
Between intense shopping activity and entertainment on the beaches, reserve time to spent in this remarkable museum (- 3531862; AI-Fahidi St, Bastakia, from Saturday to Thursday, 8.30-20.30, 14.30-20.30 Friday). Housed inside the Al-Fahidi Fort, dating back to 1787, it is probably the oldest in the city.
Dubai: Jumeira Mosque
This pink sandstone mosque (AI-lumeira Rd, Jumeira), with a lovely minaret, is probably the most suggestive building of all the Emirates and it is renowned for being the only Arab Emirates mosque open to non-Muslims. The Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding offers interesting tours 'Open Doors, Open Minds' (- 344 7755; smccu@emirates.net.ae; free admission, 5-10 Sundays and Thursdays) for non-Muslims who want to introduce themselves to the religion and culture of the United Arab Emirates. Tours last one hour and visitors can put questions to the guides. Remember to dress in a decent way (avoid shorts and shirts with short sleeves; in particular, women must cover their hair).
Dubai: Burj al-Arab
If you want to see how the other half of the Dubai’s inhabitants live, we recommend a visit to the Burj al-Arab (- 3017771; AI-Jumeira Rd, Umm Suqeim; adult/children Dh 200/75, to spent in Burj bars, shops and restaurants), the famous temple of luxury in the city. The same hotel management confesses that they never imagined that the Burj al-Arab would become a greatest tourist attraction in Dubai, but it seems that now it is a forced stop for all travelers. The facts and figures speak for themselves: 202 rooms served by 1.200 staff members. Prices range from Dh 3.500 to Dh 25.000 per night. During the day, visitors cannot see the Dubainon rooms, the rotating beds and the private cinema in the Royal Suite. However, they will be able to admire the grandiose foyer, the water features fountains, the gold facing, worthy of the Palace of Versailles, the magnificent view from the Al-Muntaha restaurant over the nearby complex of Palm Island and the wonderful panoramic elevator that rush at six meters per second along 27 floors. Please take a phone call to check when the hotel accepts guests throughout the day, because the management reserves the right to deny the visitors when it is too crowded. You also have to pay attention to clothing: there are not allowed jeans, shorts and other casual clothes or sandals for men.
