Why the Honeymoon
The honeymoon is the trip made by a newly married couple to celebrate their marriage. The origin of the name is unclear. Surely, the term "moon" refers to the first month of marriage. Some texts (for example "The Oxford Dictionary") consider the "honey" a reference to the sweetness of the first period after the wedding.
According to Wikipedia - the online encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeymoon - a honeymoon is a holiday, which allows two people to celebrate their marriage in intimacy and seclusion. The honeymoon is also an opportunity to visit beautiful places in company with someone you love, to enjoy together the pleasure of a very special and romantic holiday.
The honeymoon custom has become popular in the 19th century, first in Great Britain and after in the rest of the world. In the last century the most popular honeymoon destinations was the French Riviera, but in particular Italy with its romantic cities like Rome, Verona or Venice.
However, the honeymoon is not only a modern custom. Some historians even date back the honeymoon to the Babel time: when was used to give the married couples a quantity of mead (a honey liqueur) sufficient for a month. It was thought that this drink would guarantee fertility. The habit of giving the spouses a quantity of mead or similar drinks was common in ancient Rome and in the Middle Ages. A so ancient origin of the expression "honeymoon" is justified because it is present in many languages, like French (Lune de miel), Spanish (Luna de miel) and English (honeymoon). In Wales (mis mêl) and Arabic (shahr el 'assal) are used expressions that literally translated means "month of honey".
Italy, Romantic Itineraries for the Honeymoon: Verona
Perhaps the most romantic place in Italy is the famous "balcony of Juliet" in Verona, quoted in "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare.
Along the ancient Roman road, the present Via Cappello, there is a medieval tower-house. In the hall, there are two panels, which host love letters, signatures and phrases of lovers who have passed through this enchanting corner.
The romantic balcony immediately attracts the attention even of those are not on honeymoon: from there - argues the popular tradition - the beautiful Juliet showed. The courtyard, originally larger, was completely restored in the early decades of the twentieth century when, after the purchase by the comune of Verona, was turned into a museum.
In the late sixties was placed in the courtyard a bronze statue of Juliet, before which the tourists and the lovers like to be photographed.
William Shakespeare, the great English writer, makes the city of Verona famous in the world. Now the two young Veronesi, Romeo and Juliet, are love symbols. A play written 400 years ago has made this balcony one of the most visited places during the honeymoon in Italy.
Italy, Romantic Itineraries for the Honeymoon: Venice
The heart of Venice is Piazza San Marco, but the symbol place of the city is the Rialto Bridge: an Antonio da Ponte’s work, built in 1591. You cannot forget that scenery, if you go on honeymoon in Venice. It was the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot: in fact, remained the only bridge until 1854, hence for 250 years.
Venice is a romantic city. If Venice has a flaw, this is the crowd of tourists come to visit from all over the world, including many couples on honeymoon. If then the honeymoon occurs in conjunction with some mass events - like the Carnival – certainly, they will appreciate the crowd in colorful clothes and masks, but the intimacy of the honeymoon will be compromised.
These are the most significant events that increase the flow of tourists. It must be taken into account:
Venetian carnival → from the thirteenth to the day before Ash Wednesday
Venice Biennial (which include: International exhibition of art → All odd years; International Architecture Exhibition → All even-numbered years; Venice International Film Festival → End of August/early September)
Feast of Madonna della Salute → November 21
Feast of Sensa → Ascension Day
Feast of the Redeemer → Third Sunday in July
Venice Marathon → Fourth Sunday of October
Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics → Every four years, late May/early July
Regatta of the Befane → January 6
Historical Regatta → First Sunday in September
International Boat Show → mid-March
Feast of Saint Mark → April 25
Italy, Romantic Itineraries for the Honeymoon: Rome
Rome has so many romantic corners that it is impossible list them all. To mention only some of them, we suggest the Fountains and Aqueducts of Rome. These are monuments and evocative landscapes, which merit a visit on a trip so important like the honeymoon.
The Popes built the biggest Roman fountains: the Trevi Fountain, the Fountain of Happy Water (or Moses), the Four Fountains, the Fountain of the Old Boat, the Fountain of the Four Rivers and the Fountain of Neptune.
There are also many ornamental fountains: the Fountain of Triton and the Fountain of the Bees, Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s works, the Fountain of the Turtles and that of the Baboon. As for aqueducts, some of them justify a visit, even during a honeymoon.
Aqueducts built during Roman times are the Appia, Anio Vetus, Aqua Marcia, Aqua Tepula, Aqua Julia, Aqua Virgo, Aqua Alsietina, Aqua Claudia, Anio novus, Aqua Traiana and Aqua Alexandrina. In modern times, Popes did restore the ancient Roman aqueducts and made built others, like the Aqua Felix. In the twentieth century, finally, were built the waterworks of Peschiera and Appio-Alexandrine. Scenery that does not give up, even during a honeymoon, is the Park of Aqueducts, not far from downtown, along via Tuscolana.
Celebrations and events in Rome. On the honeymoon, you should take into account the time in which the capital city of Italy is more crowded.
May 1, Labor Day: Trade Unions organize a free concert in Piazza di Porta San Giovanni in Laterano. It is an event attended by hundreds of thousands of spectators, often more than one million;
Republic Day, June 2: the traditional military parade take place along Via dei Fori Imperiali to Piazza Venezia and ends at the Altar of the Fatherland;
Feast of 'Noantri. It takes place in Trastevere, perhaps the most characteristic district of Rome. It is celebrated on the first Saturday after July 16.
