DISCOVERING THE HOME OF THE WONDERFULLY UNIQUE AMARONE

Valpolicella is a cultural zone of the province of Verona, Italy, east of Lake Garda. The hilly agricultural and marble-quarrying region of small holdings north of the Adige is famous for wine production. Valpolicella ranks just after Chianti in the certified Italian wine production D.O.C. (Denominazione di Origine Controllata).

Made up of a myriad of lush, verdant valleys, Valpolicella is an intensely beautiful region, whose name comes from "val polis cellae" and means "valley of many cellars", and is characterized by the steep, vine-laced ridges that run alongside its gurgling mountain streams.

Built along the Adige River and the later home of Dante Alighieri, the city boasts a number of beautiful sights amongst its circuitous streets. The "Arena di Verona" is the third largest arena in Italy, and should not be missed by anyone sightseeing in Verona Italy. Despite being constructed in 30 AD, much of the original architecture remains, and the amphitheater still houses opera productions throughout the summer.

As you can imagine, seeing a performance of the story of Romeo and Juliet in its true setting is a staple of most travelers' visit to the city, and the summer months bring about Verona's famous Shakespeare festival, which includes performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Piazza Dei Signori and Palazzo del Governo are other must-sees for those sightseeing in Verona Italy. San Fermo is another of Italy's striking combinations of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The cathedral's interior is designed to appear like the inside of a boat, and has a lower section featuring the very stones that Saint Fermo was tortured and killed upon.

Starting off by improving the quality of the vineyards and adopting the wine-making culture learned in France, the company succeeded in selling Italian wine, particularly Veronese wine, abroad. Right from the start Bertani realised the importance of these places and the characteristics of the different types of soil, so that today it owns vineyards in all the principal Veronese wine-producing areas.
