The Doha Festival in Qatar
Qatar is a small state (between Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Persian Gulf) with only about 800.000 inhabitants. Qatar is a booming and a very rich country, thanks to oilfield and especially to the deposit of natural gas.
Qatar is at third place in the world (after Russia and Iran) for gas reserves, equivalent to 15% of world reserves.
A turning point in the Qatar’s history is the Doha cultural festival.
Thanks to the progress of Qatar under His Majesty Sheikh Meshal bin Jassim bin Mohamed Al Thani, Prince of the country, inhabitants have quickly realized the importance of the culture and have established the Doha cultural festival. For Qatar, through this festival, the traditions of the Arab world heritage blend with contemporary culture.
To help to build a better future, the festival established its guidelines with precision. The main is to make the culture of Qatar known: this will help to create a common consciousness with other countries, promoting, at the same time, Qatar as an emergent Arab country. The ambitious aim of this small country is to make Doha the cultural capital of the Arab countries, bearing in mind the creative freedom and the variety of the cultures.
The Doha festival therefore aims the enjoyment of culture and arts, heritage of all human being. To this purpose, it organizes conferences, poetry evenings and exhibitions of figurative arts, even from abroad. The festival invites intellectuals, educated people, poets and writers of the Arab countries to share these evenings, encouraging innovation in any intellectual field.
Qatar: the Arab Nation with Doha as Capital
Qatar was dominated by Persians for thousands of years and, more recently, by the Ottomans and the British. Differently from the most nearby Emirates, Qatar declined to become part of Saudi Arabia or the Arab Emirates.
Qatar is a region with rich oilfield and gas deposit. Regarding the area for cultivation, this does not take much room and there is not mach water because water tables are unusable, due to the high mineral content. The seawater desalination is the only remedy. The government has ratified international environmental agreements on biodiversity and desertification.
